Is Lap Band Surgery Good For Severe Asthmatics?
Mar 5, 2010 Uncategorized
The rapid increase in obesity across the country has resulted in a number of serious health problems. Many of these health problems can deteriorate a person’s quality of life and even shorten a person’s life. One such health condition that is made worse when obese is asthma. Studies are now showing that there is a link between asthma and morbid obesity. For people who are suffering from severe obesity, lap band surgery has been shown to be an effective method of weight loss that reduces instances of severe asthma attacks.
Obesity has been proven to be a risk factor for such diseases as heart disease, some types of cancer, and diabetes. Now, research studies are revealing that obesity is a risk factor for asthma. For instance, studies now show the risk for developing asthma increases when there is a large increase in weight. When a person is seriously overweight, their breathing becomes shallow because their lungs do not expand as much as it would if one were a normal healthy weight. As well, in obese individuals, there is a chronic inflammation of the lungs which reduces the airway passage. The inflammation takes place in the fatty tissue. A narrower airway passage also means the airways will remain blocked when breathing normally which reduces oxygen exchange. The airways will contract more causing more asthma symptoms. Narrow airways in obese asthmatics are more likely to stay closed during normal breathing which results in reduced oxygen exchange which puts one in a higher risk category for pulmonary hypertension. As well, obese people are more prone to sleep apnea and gastroesophageal reflux disease which can make asthma worse.
When a person suffers from obesity, they tend to have more severe asthma problems than those who are not obese. With a weight loss surgery such as lap band surgery, there can be considerable improvement for people suffering from asthma. With the loss of the excess fat, lung function will improve, inflammation will subside, the air passages will open up, and people will breathe better. As well, they will need less medication and there will be fewer trips to the hospital due to a severe asthma attack.
Lap band surgery has become a popular weight loss procedure to treat obesity because it is minimally invasive with few side effects. As well as having proven positive health results, the procedure normally takes less than an hour and the patient recovery time is short with most patients going home just a few hours after the procedure. It is also the only reversible option and post operative lap band adjustments are made without additional surgery.
During home recovery, the patient will have simple diet to follow as they learn how to eat healthy and the correct amounts of food. Lap band surgery is a great option for those suffering from obesity and serious health problems such as asthma. When considering any type of surgery, it is important to consult with a physician to learn about the benefits and risks involved with the procedure.
The CIBO clinic’s adjustable gastric band offers the safest, sustainable results in weight loss by reducing the amount of food your stomach can hold. Despite the lab band cost, there are many advantages. You can lose weight without hunger and feel full longer with support before and after your laparoscopic surgery. What The Supplement Companies Don’t Want You To Know
Feb 22, 2010 Fitness Weight Loss
More than 50% of people in the US take dietary supplements to enhance an aspect of their health. Maybe you take supplements on a regular basis…
You see, as a nation we spend an absurd amount of money on supplements, to the tune of billions per year.
The main issue here, however, is that lot of these supplements are sold with downright deceptive advertising, and in extreme cases, can cause serious health issues.
Thus, without further delay, here are common falsehoods the supplement companies don’t want you to know:
1. Dietary supplements are 100% safe: Absolutes don’t exist and supplements are no exception here. In fact, just because a supplement is natural is no guarantee that it’s completely safe. The reality is that many things exist in nature that are deadly.
2. Supplements are backed by scientific studies: Only prescription drugs need FDA approval. Dietary supplements, on the other hand, do NOT require rigorous FDA testing. Even worse, many of the bar charts and study references found on the packaging are simply ghost studies performed by the manufacturers themselves.
3. Your health takes front seat: Well, I wish this was true, but when you consider that billions in sales are involved… You see, with so much money on the table, companies can lose sight of what is right and what is wrong. Ephedra, for instance, is a perfect example of things gone wrong.
4. If it worked for him, it must work for me: Unfortunately, just because a supplement worked for someone else doesn’t mean it will work for you. You see, not only are our bodies very different, but the placebo effect can be the main cause of “feeling” something.
I recommend staying on the safe side here. And the best way to do this is to only take supplements that have undergone peer reviewed research. You see, peer reviewed research is the closest we can get to the truth. And with the truth you will be better informed as to what decisions are right for your health.

Is It Necessary To Exercise To Lose Flabby Upper Arms?
Jan 11, 2010 Fitness Weight Loss
Is this a flabby upper arms joke? Nope. The truth is that you can lose arm fat without having to touch a weight.
The secret lies in spontaneous fat loss. This method of losing the flab is the easiest one out there, I promise.
It’s so easy because there is no exercise involved and no dietary restrictions. You simply tweak little things here and there and the arm flab goes away just like that.
So without further delay, here are four steps you can take right now to lose those flabby upper arms:
1. Eat food that is labeled as coming from an “undesirable” place. You have to think outside of the box with this one, but it’s a nifty little trick. One study demonstrated that guests at a restaurant ate 500 fewer calories when given a wine with a label from an undesirable place.
2. Stick with slow digesting carbohydrates. Studies have shown that obese teenage boys will eat 621 fewer calories per meal if they’ve had slow digesting carbs earlier in the day. The slowest digesting carbohydrates on the planet are legumes and vegetables.
3. Have a salad before any big meal. One really cool study showed that restaurateurs ate 100 fewer calories when given a salad with dinner. Now be really careful with how much dressing you use.
4. Substitute saturated fat with unsaturated fat. One study demonstrated that people eat 200 fewer calories per meal when consuming olive oil versus butter. Olive oil is an unsaturated fat and butter is a saturated fat. Follow the above tips and you’ll notice a reduction in flabby upper arms with minimal effort on your part.
Trust me, the research backs this up. Losing the arm fat doesn’t have to be a never-ending uphill battle. Take action today so that you can have sexy arms tomorrow!
Having said that, you will get much faster results if you add in some exercise. Please do not get the wrong message, exercise is still a great tool for toning your arms!

George Washington University Weight Loss Expert Reveals 4 Fat Cell Facts
Nov 8, 2009 Fitness Weight Loss
Most of us have been waging war against the excess fat we’ve stored up in our bodies but we aren’t sure why these deposits are so stubborn and never give up. A George Washington University weight loss expert unveils four facts related to fat cells that might help you lose weight.
Fact Number One: Pre-fat cells inevitably turn into fat cells and you may be helping them do just that
That’s right; right now, you are manufacturing millions of pre-fat cells, and what they really want to do is to become full-fledged fat cells (also called adipocytes, in scientific terms). And even though you don’t want them to do that, you are probably very likely helping them do just that. How can you change that?
A George Washington University weight loss expert explains: A full fledged fat cell stores fat, a pre-fat cell does not. We involuntarily help a pre-fat cell become a fat cell by pushing two hormones to produce themselves in excess quantity within the body.
Those two hormones are insulin and cortisol, and you encourage their overproduction with your lifestyle.
Most often, cortisol is overproduced when you get too little sleep and have too much stress. Does that sound familiar? If it does, guess what? That’s right; you are stressing and under-sleeping your way to fat cell growth.
The second hormone, insulin, is also overproduced because you get too little sleep and have too much stress — AND it’s also overproduced when you make poor food choices that are high in simple carbohydrates; simple carbohydrates cause insulin spikes, which in turn can cause weight gain, especially (you guessed it) fat storage. (By the way, lack of exercise, too, can keep your insulin levels higher than optimal.)
Fact Number Two: Once the fat cells are accumulated, they don’t go away
This can be attributed to your irresponsibility. Once you get these fat cells, they are yours for the keeping. These fat cells got accumulated as a result of you taking the least amount of care of yourself, you neglecting your sleep, not eating properly, not exercising and stressing.
What can be done?
Fact Number Three: Proper sleep can help you shun excess body weight
If you spend at least seven to nine hours a night asleep (REALLY asleep, no TV going, in other words) you’re going to lower your levels of cortisol and raise your levels of beneficial, fat-hating hormones like testosterone, leptin, and growth hormone. With enough leptin, for example, you’re less hungry (which will help you make better food choices) and your metabolism is higher (which will help you burn fat). Growth hormone and testosterone (yup, even for women in smaller amounts than for men) encourage muscle growth and fat burning.
You need not provide your body with any artificial supplements of these hormones. Proper sleep alone is sufficient in doing this job.
Fact Number Four: Sufficient sleep can put off fat storage by bringing down levels of cortisol and insulin
Our weight loss expert at George Washington University explains that fat cells once acquired never go away. But this does not mean that they store fat automatically without your involvement. Small amounts of fat are required for proper functioning of the body but to keep excess levels of fat off, reducing insulin levels will help by increasing levels of hormone sensitive lipase (HSL). HSL results in keeping fat out of the fat cells. While increased levels of insulin can raise the production of lipoprotein lipase. This lipoprotein lipase or LPL allows fat to come in and settle down. This is really not what any of us want.
There you have it; simply by sleeping better and making sure you destress as much as possible (along with a healthy diet and good exercise program, of course), you can watch those pounds of excess fat just melt away.

Guidelines For Extreme Dieting
Oct 24, 2009 Fitness Weight Loss
Drastic dieting is not easy and can have some serious consequences. Having said that, I understand that countless people will make the decision to go on a crazy diet regardless. Hence, I have decided to provide some key tips on how to minimize the damage.
Now why are extreme diets so dangerous? The biggest down side by far is the massive weight regain that happens because of an altered metabolism. And if taken too far, there can be even worse consequences.
So here is how to minimize the damage of drastic dieting:
1. Understand how to transition away from the diet. The biggest mistake extreme dieters make is to simply resume eating the way they used to once they hit their target weight. Huge mistake. You have to slowly phase out of the diet or else you will rebound with a vengeance.
2. Supplement. You will have to supplement your diet with a high quality multivitamin. Do your research and buy the best one you can get.
3. Figure out when you are most alert. Your biological clock will wake you up at two different times of the day. I identify when this happens and schedule your most demanding tasks accordingly.
4. Use distraction when the hunger strikes. Go to the mall, do some gardening, watch a movie, etc. Anything that gets your mind off of the hunger. Some top wrestlers usually play video games to get their minds off of the extreme pre-competition dieting.
5. Expect the regain. You will gain some weight once you stop dieting. There is no way around this. So do not get discouraged when it happens.
6. Do not do it long term. Even if you are getting outstanding results. Doing so can seriously damage your metabolism. And once your metabolism is haywire, it can take a lot of work to fix it.
Crash dieting is very tough. And in most cases it is not worth it. Nevertheless, if you decide to go on an extreme diet please follow the tips in this article so that you can minimize the damage.

How To Take Your Arm Workouts To The Next Level
Oct 20, 2009 Fitness Weight Loss
Every trainer has a different angle on how to do arm exercises. However, some angles are less effective than others. And if you’re using outdated techniques, you could be wasting too much time.
And in the worst of cases, you may fail to see any type of result from all your hard work. Now once you stop seeing results (if at all) your chances of abandonment sky rocket.
So here are some tips on how to make your arm exercises more effective:
1. Go for the full stretch. This is really important when doing any type of overhead extension for your triceps. By getting the full stretch at the bottom portion of the movement, you’ll ensure maximum toning of the long head. What’s the long head? The area where arm fat lives!
2. Squeeze, squeeze and squeeze some more. This is a great technique when doing any type of press down. The key here is to consciously squeeze the lateral head of your triceps at the midpoint of any press down movement. It will be painful, but very effective.
3. Employ some negatives every so often. The positive portion of a bicep curl is when the weight comes up. Yet one of the most effective ways to accelerate arm toning is to focus on when the weight comes down. So next time you do a bicep curl, slow down the descent. You should feel a burning sensation!
4. Use heavy weights with lower repetitions. The idea that doing arm exercises with lighter weights and higher repetitions is optimal for arm toning is a myth. Don’t be afraid to use some really heavy weights in the 3-6 repetition range. As always, never let your form deviate.
There are two ways to do arm exercises for women: the effective way and the ineffective way. If you follow the pointers outlined in this article, you’ll be well on your way to rapid arm toning. So make sure you act on this information now and not later.

What’s Affecting Your Basal Metabolic Rate?
Oct 17, 2009 Fitness Weight Loss
The bedrock of any effective toning program is the ability to raise BMR (basal metabolic rate). The largest percentage of calories burned comes from your BMR.
The main problem here, though, is that you may be lost amongst all the marketing claims. Doesn’t it seem like every new product comes with a novel way to increase calories burned?
So without further ado, here are some things that really affect BMR and fat loss:
1. Chronological age. As the years go by so does muscle. One of the main causes of disease with age is the loss of muscle mass. And muscle mass has a very strong influence over BMR.
2. Muscle mass proportion. Having a solid base of lean muscle tissue will ensure a powerful basal metabolic rate. And if you eat enough vitamins and minerals, the mitochondria (energy producers) within your cells will work full force.
3. A high fever. A strong fever will also raise your BMR. Does this mean you should try to get sick? Absolutely not! But it doesn’t hurt to know the facts.
4. Catabolic hormones. In the short run, stress hormones will cause your BMR to go up. But caution is warranted here because over the long run, said hormones will actually lower your BMR. Why? Because of lean tissue loss.
5. Temperature. If you have to adjust to cold temperatures your BMR goes up. If you have to adjust to hot temperatures your BMR also goes up.
6. Fasting. Fasting decreases BMR much faster than most women realize. In a very short amount of time, your metabolism could dip dramatically. The key here is to be in a slightly negative caloric state and to eat every couple of hours. Doing so will minimize the damage.
Knowing what effects your BMR will bring you many steps closer to the lean and sexy body of your dreams. The key here is to ignore all the hype and to seek out reliable sources of information. After all, it’s the facts that will help you reach your goal.
